How to Solve the AI Plagiarism Problem

ChatGPT has teachers worried about "AI plagiarism" on student writing assignments.  Students outsourcing their writing to AI chatbots bypass the productive struggle needed to build the foundational critical thinking and cognitive skills normally developed during the writing process.  AI detectors fail to reliably catch this problem.  What to do? Assess the process, not just the paper!  North Brunswick Township Schools has been doing this in partnership with Scrible since before the pandemic and it turns out to be a game changer for preventing AI plagiarism.  Come learn about this pedagogically sound approach to mitigating the main risk of generative AI.

Transforming Students' Perception of Assessment Through Collaboration

Students don’t like taking tests.  Often, announcing a test or a quiz, students moan and complain.

How can we take what appears to be a punitive experience and instead make it an enjoyable and effective learning experience?

By applying teamwork and collaboration described by the Science and Engineering Practices (SEP) from the Next Generation Science Standards, and letting students work together in teams of two to four students on a set of carefully designed on-line three-dimensional questions formatted similarly to familiar online assessments, the dreaded test turns into a fun, collaborative experience.

Activate Your Heroic Teaching / Leading / Learning Potential: The Modern Educator’s Toolbox to Excel Anywhere

This presentation will distill the wisdom contained within the Heroic Training Platform to optimize any educator’s potential to teach, lead, and learn.  Here, participants will learn the “ultimate game,” which is to close the gap between who we are as educators and whom we could be moment-to-moment.  During the presentation, participants will identify specific factors in their work-life (and life-life!) that push for energy and balance that enhance our day-to-day interactions with our work and our school community members.

Being an educator is tough (!!) in 2023 and forecasters suggest that there is no respite in sight.  If that is the case, we must activate our Heroic potential by forging anti-fragile confidence - a confidence that urges us to get excited (perhaps even re-excited!) about our work and to silently say, “bring it on!”  In our educational dichotomy, we have the choice of reacting or creating.  This presentation will give participants the ability to create agency within the parameters of their professional responsibilities.

Specifically, participants will work toward understanding in the following areas: Enervators VS Energizers, Building Masterpiece Days, Strategizing AM / PM Bookends, WOOP: Wish/Outcome/Obstacle/Plan, Transforming into the Best Version of Yourself Moment to Moment, Create a Win with Algorithmic Thinking, and Playing the Equanimity Game by experiencing higher highs and higher lows.

Ditch Grades Not Accountability with AI Tools

Descriptive, narrative feedback is essential to shifting the focus to student learning.  However, in the presence of grades this feedback gets ignored.  Until now, it has also been difficult for administrators to access this information. In this session, we will explore how a combination of clearly defined outcomes, educational technology, and AI can create an environment that thrives on feedback.  Classroom tested techniques and examples of student work will be shared.  We will also demonstrate how to go beyond the chatbot with AI.  This is meant to be a discussion where questions will be encouraged throughout.
